Chile earthquake: 8.3-magnitude quake strikes off coast
One million people had to leave their homes in Chile after a powerful quake hit the country’s central region.
At least 10 people died when the 8.3-magnitude quake hit at at 19:54 local time (22:54 GMT) on Wednesday, September 16, 2015.
We first heard of the Earthquake in Chile when Steve received a news alert on his phone while we were at a High School Volleyball Game. The News Alert stated that a 8.3 magnitude Earthquake strikes Chile, near Santiago. That was all the alert said. My first reaction was to tear up and immediately begin to worry about my sweet missionary living in a poorly built structure, in a rough area of Santiago, where he can see through the ceiling. But, very soon, I felt a sense of relief, and with no details yet, we knew all would be ok. We had to assume that “no news” from Chandler or the Mission was “good news”. We later realized after reading the news that Santiago wasn’t too affected by the Earthquake.
2 days later (today) I received this email from Chandler:
“Hey mom Im just writing to say that I’m all good and the Earthquake experience was actually pretty cool. I’ll tell you the story in my next email. The coast got it the worst becuase of the Tsunami that followed. Todo bien todo traquillo.
